A White House official announced that a private plane had mistakenly entered the airspace of the home where US President Joe Biden and his wife are spending the weekend, and that they were "safe."

The White House said President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden were briefly evacuated from their home on Saturday, after a small private jet mistakenly entered restricted airspace over Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

US Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the plane was immediately removed from restricted airspace.

He added that the pilot, whose identity has not been revealed, will be questioned.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that the pilot was not on the appropriate radio channel, was not following the pilots' notice that was given, and violated published flight instructions," he said.

The incident, which occurred at 5 pm GMT, caused confusion in downtown Rehoboth Beach on a busy weekend, as the presidential motorcade quickly moved around the city before returning to Biden's residence.
