"We will determine whether the FDA followed procedures for conducting inspections and recalls of infant formula in accordance with federal requirements," the agency's inspector general said in a statement.

Specifically, the agency will review the FDA's actions leading up to the February 2022 Abbott recall of infant formula.

Earlier, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that military transport aviation began to urgently import baby food from Europe to the United States. 

At the same time, New York Mayor Eric Adams signed a decree declaring a state of emergency in the city due to a shortage of infant formula.
