According to CNN, citing sources, politicians are considering an Italian plan that implies the neutrality of Ukraine in exchange for security guarantees and the launch of Ukrainian-Russian negotiations on the future of Crimea and Donbass.

“Ukraine is not directly involved in these discussions, despite the US promise “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” the channel says.

CNN quotes several U.S. and Western officials stating growing concern that the conflict in Ukraine could drag on for years if the parties do not return to the negotiating table.

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that the West's peaceful initiatives to resolve the situation in Ukraine resemble a "pure stream of consciousness."

According to him, this also applies to Italy's plan.
