The Angolan presidency announced Friday, June 3, the date of the national general elections: on August 24, 2022, Angolans will vote for the legislative elections, for the deputies to then elect the number one of the majority list for the presidency, in an indirect presidential election.

The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), in power since independence and led by outgoing President João Lourenço, will once again be opposed to the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (Unita) , of Adalberto Costa Junior, who rallied the opposition.

The

President of the Republic

calls general elections for the election of the President of the Republic and the members of the National Assembly and sets the date for August 24, 2022

", indicated the Presidency of the Republic

in a press release published on 3 june

.

It thus fixes the date for the general elections,

12 after the establishment of the indirect election

of the President of the Republic by the deputies.

Adalberto Costa Junior is certain of this: he assures that he will manage to get Unita out of the opposition in which the old guerrillas have been maintained since

the end of the civil war

, just 20 years ago.

Elected

to lead the movement in 2019

, he managed to do what his predecessor Isaias Samakuva had failed to do in the last election: form the United Patriotic Front coalition, after agreements with two other opposition parties, in especially that of Abel Chivukuvuku.

This came third in the last legislative elections.

Adalberto Costa Junior hopes to capture the voices of young people, who no longer hesitate to denounce poverty, unemployment and corruption.

He is nevertheless worried about the conduct of the ballot: "

The government has already demonstrated that it does not have the will to organize a transparent act

", he declared in the middle of the week.

He also attacked his rival: "

The hopes raised did not last long, and today the regime has hardened... Between José Eduardo dos Santos and João Lourenço, nothing has changed in matter of corruption.

 »

João Lourenço

succeeded in 2017 José Eduardo dos Santos

, absolute master of the country for 38 years, accused of having largely misappropriated national resources by favoring his family and relatives.

The outgoing president, on the contrary, puts forward his results in economic matters, and his openness which allows him to charm investors and international financial organizations.
