A train derails in Germany.. deaths and injuries (video)

Four people were killed and 30 injured when a crowded train derailed near a ski resort in southern Germany on Friday, police said.

A police spokesman said that 15 of the injured were receiving treatment in hospitals, adding that 60 people were on board the train at the time of the accident, which occurred north of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria.

The official said that prosecutors and the police had opened an investigation to find out the circumstances of the accident.

No information was available about the identities of the victims and whether the driver was among the dead.

A spokesman for the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district office said earlier that 60 people were injured in the accident.

The Munchener Merkur newspaper, citing a local newspaper, reported that several school students were on the train.

Pictures on social media showed the carriages of a double-decker regional train stuck in tree branches, as well as people being carried on stretchers or standing on the tracks.

Police said a major emergency services operation was still underway, and the railway line was now completely closed.
