A protester was shot dead in the demonstrations marking the dispersal of the sit-in in Khartoum

A protester was shot dead Friday in Khartoum, according to the Central Committee of Doctors, at a time when a United Nations expert visiting the Sudanese capital called for avoiding "excessive use of force" against thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators.

AFP correspondents reported that demonstrations on the third anniversary of the dispersal of the sit-in were organized to demand accountability for those responsible for the killing of 128 people during the dispersal of a sit-in against the regime of former President Omar al-Bashir on June 3, 2019.

The Sudanese army had forced Al-Bashir to resign in April, but the demonstrators continued their sit-in at the time near the headquarters of the Army Staff, demanding the military share power with civilian officials.

On the third of June, armed men in army uniforms suppressed the participants in the sit-in.

On Friday, the demonstrators renewed their opposition to the coup carried out by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the subsequent repression.

The pro-democracy Central Doctors Committee reported that a young man in his twenties was killed by a bullet fired by security forces, hitting him in the chest.

This brings to 99 the number of protesters killed since the coup was carried out, according to the same source.

AFP correspondents reported that the demonstrators in the streets of the capital demanded the return of the army to its barracks.

For his part, the UN human rights expert Adama Deng called on Twitter, "the authorities to exercise restraint and not to resort to excessive force against the demonstrators today."
