Eight out of ten Britons think she has done a good job as queen.

But in recent years, the royal family has been shaken by several scandals.

Prince Andrew has been charged with sexual assault.

The duke couple Prince Harry and Meghan have left the royal house and their missions in court.

They have also accused an unnamed royalty of racism.

In the Commonwealth, the relevance of the British royal family is increasingly being questioned.

As recently as 2021, Barbados dumped the queen and became a republic.

In several other commonwealth countries, the same discussion is taking place about shaking off the colonial heritage.

Generation issue

One in five Britons wants to abolish the monarchy, according to the opinion institute YouGov.

Among the younger ones, it stands and weighs between those who want to preserve the monarchy and those who want to establish a republic.

The day when Queen Elizabeth's successor takes a seat on the throne is getting closer.

And Prince Charles is nowhere near his mother's popularity.

Recent opinion polls show that only around 50 percent of Britons have a positive impression of Charles.

Republic, a group that wants to abolish the monarchy, has high expectations when it comes to the upcoming change of throne.

- The monarchy IS the queen and the queen IS the monarchy, says Graham Smith who is the head of the Republic.

Safe successor to the throne?

In a nationwide campaign, the group addresses a clear call to the British: "Make Elizabeth the Last", let Elizabeth be the last.

The hashtag reads: #AbolishThe Monarch.

Queen Elizabeth's stated hope is that the 70th anniversary will give the British a chance to have fun and think about other things than Brexit, the corona pandemic and the economic crisis.

A qualified guess is that she also wants to highlight Prince Charles as a secure successor to the throne and secure the survival of the monarchy.
