He was found responsible for the death of two of his friends in a road accident in 2019 in Plonéour-Lanver in Finistère.

A 26-year-old man was sentenced on Thursday to five years in prison by the Quimper criminal court.

The young man, placed under a warrant of committal and who is prohibited from retaking his driving license for a period of five years, was prosecuted for double manslaughter, failure to hold a driving licence, failure to assist persons in danger and misdemeanor leak.

On May 23, the prosecution had requested a seven-year prison sentence against him.

He fled after the accident

The tragedy occurred in the early morning of January 12, 2019 on a departmental road after an alcoholic nightclub outing to celebrate the driver's license that the driver had passed the day before.

He thought, wrongly, to have obtained it.

At the end of the evening, the young man had asked to drive, but in a bend he had lost control of the vehicle in which were three of his friends, aged 19 to 22.

After the accident, he had left the scene and hitchhiked to return home, before being arrested in the afternoon.

One of the passengers was found dead by the rescuers who arrived on the scene more than an hour after the tragedy.

Another passenger died two days later at Brest hospital, while the third was seriously injured.
