Fruit can be a nutrient-rich addition to a healthy, balanced diet, but not many people realize that fruits of all kinds contain different amounts of sugar.

Learn about some of the low-sugar types here.

Eating fruit is a healthy way to add essential vitamins, minerals, fiber and water to your diet, but some fruits, such as bananas, grapes and cherries, are higher in natural sugars (fructose) than other fruits.

And if you're on a low-sugar or low-carb diet, it's important to know how much sugar is in the fruit you're eating.

Here are a few fruits that are low in sugar but rich in nutrients and health benefits, according to a report in Deutsche Welle:

peach

Despite its sweetness, a medium-sized peach contains about 13 grams of sugar.

Peaches are a good source of vitamin C as well as the antioxidant beta-carotene, and can reduce cell damage and support overall health, says Joe Cunningham, MD, clinical director of The Gut Health Clinic.

Peaches are also a source of potassium, which plays a key role in the function of many organs in the body as well as our nervous system.

the strawberry

A delicious and beautiful fruit, in addition to being a good source of vitamin C and fiber, 8 medium-sized strawberries contain only about 8 grams of sugar, and contain a range of nutrients useful for preventing cancer and promoting heart health.

Black raspberries

A fruit full of beneficial, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial phytochemicals.

One cup of blackberries contains only 7 grams of sugar.

It is also a good source of fiber and vitamins C, A, K.

grapefruit

A great option for breakfast, half of a grapefruit contains 8.5 grams of sugar.

But there is an important note, as grapefruit interferes with the absorption of some medications such as cholesterol or blood pressure lowering medications.

So it is best to consult your doctor before adding it to your diet.

apple

One medium apple contains 19 grams of sugar.

This fruit consists of about 86% water.

In addition to the various nutrients in apples, it helps with sleep and cases of constipation, according to what was published by the "Life Science" website.

orange

Each orange contains approximately 12 grams of sugar, and is also rich in vitamin C and fiber. Oranges also contain many different phytochemicals, including flavanols, which are linked to healthy skin and improved brain function.
