Crayfish have been fished in the Råne River since the 1970s, which is also one of the country's best crayfish fishing waters.

The stock is a combination of signal crayfish and crayfish.

And in August, it is again the premiere for the popular fishing.

But this year, there are mixed feelings ahead of the upcoming premiere day, because there are strong suspicions that the Skellefteälven has been affected by the contagious disease cancer.

- It's still fifteen miles there and we can manage.

But you have to be careful, says crayfish fisherman Lars Lindström from Råneå.

Boats from the Skellefteälven should not be used

Nature conservation officer David Bell urges everyone to think - if you have had your boat in the Skellefteälven river and fished or bathed, the equipment should not be used in Norrbotten after that.

- Purely theoretically, a drop of water is enough, he says.

If there were to be crayfish plague in the Råne River as well, what would be the consequences then?

- It knocks out the stock in a very short time.

There will be a total collapse of the stock.

Then you can plant crayfish again, but it takes about ten years before you have a taxable stock again, says crayfish fisherman Lars Lindström from Råneå.

In the video above, you can hear how high the risk is of Norrbotten crayfish being infected.

This is what some of the claws that have been found in the Skellefteälven river look like.
