Good evening,

farewell, new elections and a surprise - there's a lot going on in Wiesbaden.

But it is not only worth taking a look at what may still be politically to come, but also at events that made history.

50 years ago, the RAF's "May Offensive" ended with a spectacular shootout in a residential area on Dornbusch.

And in the present?

The economy is complaining about a lack of trainees.

New in office:

For the first time in the history of the country, Astrid Wallmann is a woman taking over the office at the head of the state parliament, Boris Rhein (CDU) was elected prime minister with votes from the opposition and Volker Bouffier once again “inhumane commitment” for his farewell country certified.

But one after anonther.

Hesse now officially has a new prime minister – and his name is Boris Rhein.

74 MPs gave him their votes on Tuesday.

For the election - it was a secret one, by the way - he needed the vote of at least 69 elected representatives.

He can no longer fill the office of President of the Landtag.

He is followed by the CDU MP Astrid Wallmann.

115 of the 137 MPs voted for them.

Rhein does not want to present his specific ideas for Hesse until next week in a government statement in the state parliament.

Rhein didn't have much time to celebrate after his election.

He had to chair his first cabinet meeting right away.

How does Hesse's new prime minister tick, what drives him, what makes him special, who or what shaped him?

Our political correspondent from Wiesbaden, Ewald Hetrodt, knows the answers.

300 bullets and three arrests

: What happened on Corpus Christi 50 years ago in a residential area near Frankfurt's main cemetery is still reminiscent of a western - and marks the end of the so-called May offensive of the terrorist organization Red Army Faction (RAF).

In the early hours of the morning, onlookers were offered a kind of showdown between the state and the left-wing extremist RAF.

Our colleague Matthias Trautsch rummaged through archive material, looked at the photos from back then and rubbed his eyes again and again with some amazement.

His Frankfurt - scene of the crime.

And the citizens as curious onlookers right in the middle.

After an exchange of fire - more than 300 cartridges were later counted - the police managed to arrest Andreas Baader, Holger Meins and Jan-Carl Raspe.

In the weeks before, the republic had been shaken by an unprecedented series of attacks.

During the May offensive, the RAF carried out attacks in Frankfurt, Augsburg, Munich, Karlsruhe, Hamburg and Heidelberg.

Four people were killed and more than 100 injured, some of them life-threatening.

So the nation was on alert.

And so it is not surprising that a Frankfurter's tip that he had noticed 2-4 young people with gas bottles in the Hofeckweg building was taken very seriously by the police.

The events after the shooting overturned.

Matthias Trautsch looks back.

The good news first: The number of unemployed in Hesse is almost as low as before the Corona crisis.

Around 153,000 men and women are currently registered as unemployed, roughly as many as in May of the pre-Corona year 2019. In contrast, there are almost a third more vacancies than a year ago.

In Frankfurt alone, suitable applicants are currently being sought for 9,000 posts.

But, as required by the dramaturgy, good news is usually followed by bad news.

So also in this case.

The Hessian economy has growing concerns about young talent.

The number of young people looking for an apprenticeship is falling.

Just 28,000 school graduates have expressed any interest in vocational training.

There were 35,000 in the previous year.

According to the industry experts, the reason for the development - how could it be otherwise - is the Corona crisis.

The continuing insecurity is keeping many young people from entering the world of work.
