So far, the situation has been resolved by sending those detained in Malmö to other places.
- We have sent to all the prisons here in the South region, but also to the prison in Gothenburg, says Peyman Damirchi, acting head of the prison service in Malmö.
Other spaces are used
In order to accommodate inmates, other spaces in the detention facilities have also had to be converted into detention cells.
- Then we have made a safety assessment and considered that they meet the requirements.
But why is it so crowded now?
- Among other things, we have changes in the law that have led to more arrests and we have had more arrests.
New building
But also at other prisons in Skåne it is fully booked and new places are underway.
- A lot is being built in the prison service right now and we are looking forward to new premises that will be ready by the turn of the year, says Peyman Damirchi.
