Two men aged 18 and 29 appeared this Monday before the criminal court of Chambéry (Savoie).

They had escaped from the town's remand center on April 27 by using the main door.

The duo had taken advantage of a change in prison staff, reports

The prisoners had been planning their escape and sawing off the bars of their cell for two weeks with a hacksaw.

At the hearing, one of them explained that the tool had been sent to them “in projection”.

The two men then climbed over the prison compound with sheets and blankets and hid in the yard.

One of the two men was to be released from prison a week later.

However, he reportedly feared being sent back to Romania.

The escapees both had extensive criminal records.

The oldest was sentenced to 15 months in prison and his sidekick to 10 months.
