This was stated during a briefing by the head of the smallpox secretariat of the WHO Emergency Program Rosamund Lewis, writes RIA Novosti.

Despite not fearing a global pandemic, Lewis spoke out about the dangers of monkeypox.

"We are concerned that the world's population has not been immune to orthopoxviruses since smallpox eradication ended and that the virus may try to exploit a niche and spread more easily between people," the WHO spokesperson said.

Earlier, the World Health Organization reported 257 confirmed cases of monkeypox and about 120 suspected cases in 23 countries.
