The food situation in East Africa is getting worse.

Last year, 50 million went hungry - now the figure is up to 82 million, according to the UN's World Food Program (WFP).

This corresponds to about a third of all those who starve in the world.

Imports grain

The war in Ukraine is exacerbating the situation, according to Michael Dunford, head of the World Food Program in East Africa.

Conflicts in the region, drought but also the corona crisis have made the famine worse in the past.

-People are much more vulnerable than they have been before.

The fact that the war also drives up prices puts enormous pressure on the population, he says.

Kenya and Somalia import around 30 percent of their grain from Ukraine and Russia.

In addition, they are dependent on fertilizers, which risks affecting future harvests.

The requirement: Open the ports

At the same time, there is a demand from the UN Secretary-General that Russian President Vladimir Putin open the ports in the Black Sea, where there are currently millions of tonnes of grain.

The longer the war lasts, the worse the situation will be.

Michael Dunford believes that money is needed - the organization believes that they would need 980 million dollars.

He also points out that people in the West spend around 6 to 10 percent of their income on food - in East Africa the corresponding figure is 50 to 60 percent.

- All cost increases harm households and drive the region towards a catastrophic situation.
