Good evening,

Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD) will soon have to answer in court, in Wiesbaden Volker Bouffier (CDU) will be honored and the focus will be on the election of his successor and Frankfurt is heading towards a supply problem for old drug addicts in need of care.

Charge admitted

: That's a thing with Mondays.

They usually come a little early.

A messed up Monday can quickly mean a messed up week.

Frankfurt's Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann now has one (another) in front of him.

Blaming the weekday Monday for this would not be fair.

But the new week begins for Feldmann just as the old one ended: with headlines about his person.

The Frankfurt Regional Court has opened the main proceedings against Feldmann.

He has to answer to the charge of accepting an advantage in court.

If a court allows an indictment, the judges, after preliminary evaluation of the evidence, have come to the conclusion that a conviction is more likely than an acquittal.

The presumption of innocence still applies, reminds FAZ editor Anna-Sophia Lang.

And at least Feldmann is still firmly convinced of his innocence.

"I can say with a clear conscience: My goodwill cannot be bought.

This sentence applies without footnotes,” he shared.

Publisher Carsten Knop comments on the latest developments: "The whole thing is likely to be quite a show, but it is carried out on the back of the reputation of the city of Frankfurt."

farewell and re-election

: A few kilometers away, someone else is celebrating farewell today.

Because Volker Bouffier (CDU) ruled the country for more than a decade (twelve years to be exact), he is being honored with a musical tribute by the Bundeswehr.

600 guests are invited to the ceremony – Bouffier was allowed to choose some of the songs himself.

Politically, we are already looking ahead again.

Because Bouffier's successor Boris Rhein is to be elected on Tuesday.

For this, however, he needs all the votes of the black-green coalition.

If there is no majority for the candidate, the old state government remains in office – with Bouffier as Prime Minister and Kühne-Hörmann as Minister of Justice.

If there is no approval for this solution either, the state parliament can still dissolve itself,

as our correspondent Ewald Hetrodt explains.

The consequence would then be: new elections within a period of 60 days.

Many members of parliament - regardless of whether they are in the opposition or members of the governing parties - are unlikely to have any interest in that.

Because for some, that could mean the end of their career and the associated benefits.

By the way: tomorrow's vote is secret - which offers all sorts of room for speculation.

And something else will be special: Even members of parliament who have tested positive for the corona virus will be able to take part in the election.

Corona was and is an excuse for many things.

But not when it comes to the election of the prime minister.

Special Care Required:

Hardly anything should be further away for "Kalle" than the political world in Wiesbaden.

Kalle is a drug addict and old.

At least that's what his body feels like.

He himself has only just passed fifty.

Kale is seriously ill.

In his condition, he should actually be cared for in a nursing home.

But there is no place for drug addicts.

Actually absurd.

Because more and more addicts are getting old instead of dying at a young age as in the past.

A success of the so-called "Frankfurter Weg", which opens up many offers of help to people.

Theresa Weiß spoke to Kalle.

And with drug help staff, who often have to do nursing work for which they are not even trained.

In her comment, she calls for looking for solutions quickly instead of watching the problem in amazement:

“If the current situation is not dealt with, these addicts will die miserably.

And if these fates become standard, it will be a disaster.

And a failure of the welfare state, which at least invested a lot in the past to guarantee this group of people a dignified life and access to therapy and health care.”
