Emergencies are saturated everywhere in Guadeloupe.
For the past few months, the island's university hospital has been overloaded and activity in the emergency department had to be limited for lack of personnel, reports France Info.
Overwhelmed, the caregivers who remain work a lot, taking only rare breaks and holidays.
"We do three out of four weekends in our month," an emergency doctor told the channel.
Many patients are taken very late and therefore in a more serious condition than the one in which they arrived.
The vaccination obligation questioned
The situation is said to be partly due to numerous departures and resignations at the hospital.
According to management, six doctors left the island's CHU in just one month.
A major recruitment campaign has therefore been launched to replace caregivers and fill vacant positions.
For their part, the unions blame the obligation to vaccinate against Covid-19.
Many caregivers refuse to receive the famous injections and are laid off.
The emergency situation “was to be expected, when you put 400 people in difficulty because they did not take a vaccine”, summarized a union delegate at the microphone of France Info.
