Yemen.. The UN envoy arrives in Aden with a proposal to extend the armistice and open the roads

The UN Special Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, arrived in Aden today, to discuss what took place during the recent Amman consultations regarding the opening of roads and crossings in Taiz and other governorates, and the extension of the current UN armistice, with the Yemeni political leadership.

The visit of the UN envoy to Yemen coincided with statements by the US envoy, Tim Lenderking, in which he called on the Yemeni parties to work to transform the truce into a more comprehensive peace process.

Well-informed sources in Aden stated that the UN envoy has a proposal to open the crossings and roads in Taiz and other Yemeni governorates, which will be presented to the leadership of the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government, and discussed with them, to come up with a vision that serves the continuation of the UN truce and efforts to extend it.

According to the sources, Grundberg is trying to extend the UN armistice, in light of what will be achieved in Oman's negotiations regarding opening roads and crossings, which reached a dead end in its first round as a result of the intransigence of the Houthi militia delegation and its refusal to open the main roads in Taiz.

The Amman consultations concluded their first round yesterday, according to a statement issued by the office of the UN envoy to Yemen, noting that a proposal was submitted for discussion between the government delegation and the Houthi delegation, to gradually reopen roads in Taiz and other governorates, and the proposal includes “an implementation mechanism and safety guarantees.” Civilian travelers", based on the discussions that lasted for 3 days and the options put forward by both parties.

Informed sources revealed that the UN proposal provides for the opening of 6 main and secondary roads in Taiz within a month, including the eastern port road (Al-Hawban - Round the Palace), and this will be opened gradually and according to a timetable, as the main road linking Taiz with the governorates of Ibb and Dhamar, all the way to Sana’a.

And the second road, through the northern port, "through the Asaifra area - Al-Sitteen Street", which leads from the city towards the rural areas north of Taiz.

And the third road, the northeastern outlet, connects “Al-Arbaeen Street” to the “Rawda” area in the city center, towards the wholesale market, as well as from the “Kellaba” area to Sofitel.

And the fourth road, the Western Entrance, is via the road that passes near the “ghee and soap factory,” towards Mocha, then the coastal governorate of Hodeidah, and a road rises from it that connects the city with several directorates in the western countryside of the governorate.

And the fifth road, the main road after the "Al-Dimna - Al Rahda - Karsh" area and linking from Taiz Governorate towards Lahj and Aden.

And the sixth road, a road that passes through the "Ghorab" area from the direction of the headquarters of the 35th Armored Brigade, all the way to Al-Sitteen Street, all the way to the north of the city.

These developments come amid warnings from the Yemeni government against the continuation of the siege on the city of Taiz by the Houthi militia, and fears that any agreement on Taiz will change, as happened in Hodeidah through the Stockholm Agreement.

On the other hand, the first meeting of the Military Coordination Committee, which included representatives of the Yemeni parties, was held yesterday in the Jordanian capital, Amman, under the auspices of the Office of the UN Envoy.

Meanwhile, fighting crowds of Houthi militias were monitored, which were pushed to the fronts of Ma'rib governorate "suddenly" yesterday, including columns of vehicles, armored vehicles and carriers of fighters, which came out of the governorates of Amran, Dhamar and Sana'a, in a clear escalation by the Houthis, which are seeking to thwart the truce with the approaching expiry date. Her first period is on the second of next June.
