For some people, money actually grows on trees.

Potted plants have come to function as an ornament, status symbols or a pure investment.

Collector Jerry Garcia from San Diego in the USA started collecting rare plants early on, and today he owns several pieces worth thousands of dollars.

But there is one plant that is considered the crown jewel of all houseplants - Philodendron spiritus-sancti (PSS).

- Right now this is the most expensive plant you can buy.

You have to give about 7000 dollars for one like that, says Jerry.

"The bubble can burst at any time"

Also in Sweden, the price of potted plants and cuttings has skyrocketed, especially during the pandemic.

SVT's economic commentator Kristina Lagerström compares it to the tulip bubble in the 17th century, where a limited supply of tulips caused prices to skyrocket.

- If there are very many who want your particular cutting and they are willing to pay, then the price will be raised.

This is how speculation bubbles start, says Kristina Lagerström to SVT Södertälje.
