The researchers behind the discovery, Sofie Nyström and Per Hammarström, have been studying the nail protein in covid-19 since the end of 2020 and the new discovery hopes they will help solve the complicated puzzle that covid-19 turned out to be.

- I would say that this discovery is very important.

It is a big piece of the puzzle that can help solve the big mystery with long-term covid and blood clotting problems, says Sofie Nyström, senior lecturer at Linköping University.

Hope to lead to better healthcare

The discovery has received much attention in the research world and Per Hammarström hopes it can inspire colleagues and that the discovery can improve healthcare.

- It's great fun, it's gotten a lot of attention.

Hopefully, that attention will lead to significant advances in the treatment of patients.

It is still the end product and that is where we notice that we have a meaning, says Per Hammarström, professor at Linköping University.
