Faced with the noticeable decline in spelling students, Aude Denizot, professor of law at the University of Le Mans, is sounding the alarm.

Syntax, spelling, conjugation… The level is in free fall according to the professor.

If screens and social networks are often blamed, photocopying also has its share of responsibility, she believes.

Are French students angry with the language of Molière?

The level of spelling in France has been falling for many years and this fall no longer concerns only schoolchildren.

Students are now just as confronted with it.

This was noticed by a professor of law at the University of Le Mans, Aude Denizot, who warns about the shortcomings in spelling of students.

"For five or six years, the punctuation has not been done, or in any case not correctly, and above all, the vocabulary has been considerably impoverished", assures Aude Denizot.

"There are more and more faults, and above all, new faults," she worries.

And to add: "For example, this year, I saw for the first time 'il y à'".

The law professor also notices more and more punctuation errors and "subordinates that are not correctly linked to the main. So it's all the writing that is bad and that we end up not understanding anymore", she asks. 

Responsible photocopying?

If screens and social networks are often presented as responsible for this continuous drop in spelling, for Aude Denizot, the culprit is to be found on the school side.

"Photocopying is indeed guilty because it leads children, middle and high school students to write much less than they could if they had notebooks to write their exercises, lessons, etc..."

"Each photocopy is a lost opportunity to write a paragraph, to create a development when it is a point that is requested later in the patent and the baccalaureate", she assures.
