The Municipal Institute of Informatics (IMI)

of Barcelona City Council

was the victim of a

fraud using the 'phishing' system

and paid

350,000 euros to a false provider

who supplanted the identity of the real one online.

As 'La Vanguardia' has advanced this Friday and has confirmed the consistory, the IMI transferred to the hacker payments totaling 349,497.88 euros (VAT included) that had to be made to the supplanted company, Open Computer Systems (SIA).

The company

did not receive the payments that should have been made by the end of 2021

, according to the credit recognition file in favor of the IMI, which today is being approved by the municipal government at the plenary session of the Barcelona City Council.

The case was discovered at the beginning of February, when SIA reported that they had not received any payment from IMI since the end of November.

The city council reported the events to the Mossos and contacted the financial entity where the payments had been made to the scammer who had supplanted the identity in case the transfers made could be recovered, but it was no longer possible because they had withdrawn from the account, explains the municipal report.
