The cycle connection between the cities of Offenbach and Neu-Isenburg, which was tackled as part of the Offenbach project "Bike Offenbach", has been completed.

In December last year, a first section of the Sprendlinger Landstraße between the city limits of Offenbach and the Geisfeldkreisel was opened to cyclists.

Since then, cyclists have been able to use a cycle path that is completely separated from motorized traffic.

Finally, the Gravenbruchring junction was completed and further markings were applied along the Sprendlinger Landstraße.

The goal of a continuous cycle connection from the Main Cycle Path at the Offenbach port via the Sprendlinger Landstrasse to Neu-Isenburg has thus been achieved.

“The traffic test is intended to show how safe cycling can work between two municipalities.

Namely through a cycle path that is completely separate from car traffic," said Offenbach planning officer Paul-Gerhard Weiß (FDP) after the opening of the bicycle axis.

The cooperation with Hessen Mobil and the city of Neu-Isenburg on this project was "very excellent", for which he would like to express his thanks, Weiß continued.

As the state transport authority, Hessen Mobil was responsible for the structural upgrading of the wheel axle.

Heiko Durth, President of Hessen Mobil, said that his company had been working flat out since autumn of last year to actually be able to make the bike connection available to cyclists at the beginning of the warm season.

Contribution to the climate strategy

Offenbach's mobility department head Sabine Groß (Die Grünen) emphasized that cycling is also of great importance for the city's climate strategy and climate protection in general: "Only if we offer a well-developed infrastructure will more and more people switch to bicycles.

I am very pleased that the route along the Sprendlinger Landstraße now offers new incentives for this.

Every kilometer that is not covered by car contributes to the climate protection concept of the city of Offenbach.”

Neu-Isenburg's Mayor Dirk Gene Hagelstein (SPD) announced that the city had already initiated a planning agreement with Hessen Mobil for the continuation of the cycle route to Dreieich and had initiated the first planning steps.

The Bike Offenbach project is not just about shifting part of inner-city mobility to bicycles for climate protection reasons and upgrading roads in such a way that bicycles can be used as a fully-fledged means of transport.

The project also includes a plan to connect the city with neighboring municipalities via cycle paths that are so comfortable and safe that commuters can also use their bikes for commuting.

One such model route is the new bike connection between Offenbach and Neu-Isenburg.
