Toronto police shoot a man with a gun near a school

Toronto police shot and wounded a man as he walked down a street with a rifle in a city neighborhood, officials said Thursday, and five schools in the area were closed.

Toronto police said on Twitter that paramedics had rushed to the site and that there was no broader threat to public safety.

Police added that the suspect, whose seriousness was not yet clear, was a young man in his late teens or early twenties.

The incident took place in Port Union, a residential area north of downtown Toronto.

The Toronto School Board said three schools remain closed, while two schools have decided to declare a state of "suspension and lockdown" due to police action in the area.
