Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, a member of the Executive Committees of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Central Committee of the National Liberation Movement (Fatah), assigned Hussein al-Sheikh with the duties of Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Organization.

Anadolu Agency quoted a member of the Executive Committee of the Liberation Organization, Wasel Abu Youssef, as saying that Abbas assigned the Sheikh yesterday, Wednesday, to the tasks of the Secretary of the Executive Committee.

Sheikh Saeb Erekat succeeds in this position, who died in November 2020 as a result of being infected with the Corona virus, and since Erekat’s death, his position has remained vacant.

Abu Yousef pointed out that the organization's internal system stipulates the election of the secretary at the meeting of the Executive Committee.

However, he added afterwards, "The president has the right to issue decisions regarding filling vacancies on issues related to missions until the issue is decided by the organization's executive committee, and the president has the right to assign members to files, as he deems appropriate."

And today, Thursday, the sheikh changed his description on his Twitter account from a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization to the Secretary of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Last February, the Palestinian Central Council chose Hussein al-Sheikh to replace the late Saeb Erekat in the Executive Committee, and Muhammad Mustafa to replace Hanan Ashrawi, who had submitted her resignation.
