Examples are countries such as India, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, Turkey and Indonesia, which prefer to defend their own economic and strategic interests.

As The Economist previously calculated, more than 60% of the world's population live in countries that are neutral and friendly to Russia.

The magazine also reported that some US allies are turning down Washington's requests for sanctions against Russia.
