A reflection is underway within the Ministry of the Interior in order to no longer deduct points from the driving license of motorists guilty of "minor speeding".

Questioned by Europe 1, drivers are delighted with the planned end of the withdrawal of points for minor speeding.

The government wants to ease the penalties for minor speeding.

For the time being, this is only a project which would concern minor speeding violations of less than 5 km/h.

“We will hit much less on small speeding tickets,” said a source at the Ministry of the Interior.

In 2020, of the 12.5 million tickets sent for speeding checked by speed cameras, 58% concerned excesses of less than 5 km / h, according to a response from the Ministry of the Interior in April 2022 to a written question of the senator (LR) of the Var, Françoise Dumont.

Europe 1 went to meet Ile-de-France motorists to gather their impressions of this potential measure.

Motivate drivers to respect speed limits

Leaving a crowded supermarket, Richard hears the news and does not understand.

According to him, this measure will encourage motorists to press the accelerator.

"What is the objective of this measure? It is to motivate drivers to respect the speed limits. It is to say to oneself: am I going to be afraid of speeding by 5 km/h because that I'm afraid of paying a fine or because I'm afraid of losing a point?", He explains at the microphone of Europe 1.

It saves points

A little further on, in this shopping street, Malik, in his thirties, is busy in his pastry shop.

For him, a potential reduction in penalties for minor speeding offenses would be very good news.

"It's always taken. It saves points and it avoids having to retake the license if you don't have many points left," says Malik.

Why are Parisian motorists the champions of France in incivility?

Nesrine agrees.

She often drives on the ring road where a slight overtaking quickly happened.

She would even like this idea to go a little further: "Avoid having a point removed, I think it's a good thing and even to remove the fine because 5 km / h is really very little."

For the moment, the Ministry of the Interior has not made any announcements in this direction.

The reform could materialize within two years.
