Australia's first lady, Jodi Haydon, 43, the daughter of a tutoring couple, grew up on the coast of New South Wales.

She is a friend, not wife, of the new Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and the two are the second non-marriage couple to receive the keys to Australia's presidential residence, Cribelle House, after former Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her partner Tim Mattison in 2013.

While it is rare for an unmarried prime minister to be elected in Australia, there is a similar case nearby: New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who postponed her wedding to fiancé Clark Gifford earlier this year after the Omicron outbreak.

Albanese was previously married to New South Wales Deputy Prime Minister Carmel Thibbott for 19 years and had their 21-year-old son Nathan - who appeared on stage with his father and Mrs. Haydon.

While Haydon did not play a prominent role at the forefront of Albanese's campaign, she has regularly appeared at his side during those events over recent weeks.

Haydon says she loved Albanese even more when he had a car accident in January 2021. His Toyota hit a Range Rover and he was taken to the hospital for an X-ray but survived a serious injury.

Haydon recalls arriving at the scene in Marrickville after a phone call and seeing her boyfriend's wrecked car.

"I saw the car's debris before I saw him and I thought he couldn't survive this," she says. "It was very scary, and at that moment, you realize how much you love this person and the fear of losing him."

"When I jumped in the ambulance and saw Anthony, then I knew the depth of my feelings for my partner."
