Good news was announced this Wednesday morning May 25 in Davos The
pharmaceutical giant Pfizer
has agreed to sell some of these treatments at cost price.
This means that only manufacturing and transport expenses will be charged in the countries concerned.
A total of 23 vaccines and drugs used in the treatment of infectious diseases, certain cancers, certain inflammations, but also certain rare diseases or which more specifically affect women.
For example,
the antiviral Paxlovid
, and the
vaccine against Covid-19
are part of this list.
And above all, if in the future Pfizer develops other drugs in these areas, they will automatically be included in the agreement.
Five countries are currently involved in this initiative: Senegal, Uganda, Ghana, Rwanda and Malawi.
Presidents Kagame and Chakwera were also present this Wednesday in Davos.
The objective for Pfizer is to identify the changes to be put in place, particularly in terms of procedures, infrastructures or even the training of healthcare personnel, so that these treatments actually reach patients.
The initiative will then be open to around forty other countries.
This should eventually allow no less than 1.2 billion people to have access to these treatments at a lower cost.
According to Pfizer, infectious diseases kill nearly one million people each year in poor countries.
The pharmaceutical giant hopes that other groups will join this initiative which has the support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
