The emergency room is intended to be a first stop for the acutely ill, who should then preferably be moved on to a care ward within four hours if there is a need for continued care.

This is what the business's goals look like.

Some stay for two days

The reality is different.

There is a lack of space at Sunderby Hospital, which IVO has also criticized the region for.

And because it is difficult to find a place in a ward, it happens that patients stay in the emergency room for up to two days.

- When you arrive in the morning, there may be ten patients left overnight, says the safety representative and nurse Anna Eriksson.

No food is served

Both staffing and premises are adapted on the basis that patients should only stay in the emergency room for a short time.

For example, no food is served here, in which case nutritional drinks apply.

- It becomes a stress of conscience that you do not have time to give everyone a good care, says Sandra Senbom, safety representative and assistant nurse.

Many assistant nurses who have left

Staff choose to leave the business, which makes the situation even more problematic.

In recent times, it is mainly assistant nurses who have left.

- What is difficult is not to recruit staff here, what is difficult is to be able to keep working, says Sandra Senbom.

Following a report to the Swedish Work Environment Authority last summer, there is currently a threat of a fine of SEK 250,000 against the emergency department if the working environment is not improved.
