A woman has been indicted for spousal homicide, said Wednesday the prosecution of Valenciennes, in the North.

She is suspected of having killed her spouse with a firearm in a "context of domestic violence".

The man died on the night of May 22 to 23, in Fresnes-sur-Escaut, near Valenciennes.

The emergency services, called on the spot for gunshot wounds, could not resuscitate the victim who died on the spot.

The couple's two children, who were "in the immediate vicinity", did not witness the facts, assures the prosecution.

They were placed in foster care.

No complaints of domestic violence had been filed.

“According to the respondent, immediately placed in police custody, the facts are part of a context of domestic violence, added the prosecution.

She told investigators that she feared for her life after a first episode of violence during the evening and took a gun to defend herself.

During a second episode of violence, she fired three times at her husband who had just told her that he was going to grab a weapon.

“No complaint of violence within the couple had been reported before these facts, noted the prosecution.

The couple had not until now been known to the justice services for acts of intra-family violence and were not the subject of any particular follow-up.
