• Following an inquiry from an elected official from the municipal opposition during the last council meeting on the problems of cohabitation between cyclists, bicycle delivery people and pedestrians in Strasbourg, "20 Minutes" asked its readers what measures, in their opinion, would be it necessary to take.

  • From "more controls" to "clearly identified cycle paths" through the questioning of delivery platforms, opinions are very clear-cut and the proposals are often identical and very clear.

Feeling of insecurity among pedestrians, altercations that would multiply, impression that "electrically assisted bicycles are too fast", that "deliverymen too often graze passers-by", cut off the road to other cyclists or even that "tracks cyclists are badly identified and little respected”… The difficult cohabitation of one and the other on the public space returned to the asphalt with an interpellation during the last municipal council of Strasbourg by the elected representative Jean Philippe Vetter.

The latter asking what solutions were envisaged by the city to improve the situation, in particular with regard to bicycle delivery people.

The opportunity also for

20 Minutes

to ask the opinion of its Internet users, while the 2021-2030 pedestrian plan in Strasbourg is unfolding.

As expected as the question is so interesting, the opinions are numerous and the comments clear-cut, even if the solutions proposed can be counted on the fingers of one hand.

“It is not good to be a pedestrian in Strasbourg”, continues Jacqueline who regrets “the most total impunity for two wheels of all kinds”.

“Everyone thinks only of their little person, regrets Aurélien, and does not think to look at what is happening around them.

So how do you ride and walk in the streets of Strasbourg loving each other?

“More checks”

Widely acclaimed, “controls”.

“We need more patrols at the hot spots in the center (Pont des corbeaux, place d’Austerlitz, rive étoile, Kléber, Grand rue, to avoid accidents and call to order those who do not respect anything”, explains Aurélien , himself a cyclist."It seems to me that the rules exist but that they are not applied, mainly because no one wants them to be applied", affirms Olivier who suspects there a "political will".

Salvatore, on the contrary, would like to “make users more responsible with the help of the authorities, with an effort in the first place on education, then fines”, if necessary.

There is also a problem of the amount of fines, considered too high by some because they are modeled on violations of the Highway Code for motorists and therefore not very applicable by the police, when others on the contrary are demanding hefty fines, or even seizure of the bike for some of the most serious cases: “The delivery people might think twice about it”, we can still read.

Better marked and safe slopes

Another major area of reflection desired by Internet users, better signposted and secure cycle paths.

"Other than by paint on the ground" and "reserved strictly for cyclists and without breaks: that is to say neither on the sidewalks or materialized by a line".

With, often cited as an example, Amsterdam.

“The materialization should at least go through a coating of a special color as is the case in the Netherlands where the city has been designed differently according to the users.

Meal deliveries in the viewfinder

The risky behavior of some bicycle meal deliverers is also the subject of numerous criticisms and remarks, even if a large majority of Internet users recognize their precariousness.

A precariousness and a fragile status which pushes for profitability at all costs and therefore obliges to multiply the infringements of the Highway Code.

Too powerful electric bikes, sometimes "tampered with to go even faster than the authorized 25 km / h" assure several Internet users, "thoroughly on the sidewalks, through the crowd", "eyes riveted on their phone so as not to miss a delivery "…

Criticisms often also accompanied by understanding.

"It is the problem of their working conditions and their precarious contracts that should be addressed because from one stems the other", underlines, like many other Frédéric, while some even ask to sanction the platforms.

More strict, some ask for "compulsory training to be delivery or courier" or "at least, a training course".

The city on the handlebars

So many proposals on which the city is already working.

Contacted, Sophie Dupressoir, delegate councilor for the cycling and walking city in charge of the file, recalled, as she had during the interpellation in the City Council, that it is "a set of measures carried out jointly which will help calm the situation.

“Checks have been intensified, recalls Sophie Dupressoir.

There have already been three specific operations, since the beginning of the year and on a daily basis, the police, municipal or national, ensure that the regulations are respected, ”she explains.

Other operations will be carried out very regularly, signaling the end of the prevention phase and “a transition to sanctions” adds Sophie Dupressoir.

A request for experimentation has also been made to the State,

Regarding the cycle paths, the adviser is counting on the bicycle "ring" which will make it possible to circumvent the city in complete safety and which will be put in place before the end of this mandate, assures Sophie Dupressoir.

Better signage, both cycle paths and regulations, with signs at the height of cyclists and pedestrians, should be put in place.

A communication campaign on compliance with the rules for all is also planned.

Finally, regarding the problem of meal deliverers, the city has started discussions with the platforms and will not hesitate to highlight those who respect the people who work for them.

At the same time, a delivery cooperative is being considered, as is a reception area with toilets, dedicated to delivery people.
