There was an assassination attempt on Russian President Vladimir Putin two months ago, and the Russian authorities thwarted it, the chief of Ukrainian military intelligence said yesterday (23rd).

Ukrainian Defense Intelligence Director Kirillo Budanou said in an interview with the local media Ukrainsk Pravda, the British daily Telegraph reported.

"There was a recent assassination attempt by so-called Caucasus representatives, not in the public domain. It was a completely unsuccessful attempt, but it actually happened about two months ago," he explains.

In recent months, the Kremlin has not disclosed anything about an attempt to assassinate Putin.

Director Budanou also declined to provide further details.

The Telegraph reported that it was not clear whether the 'Caucasus representative' referred to by Budanou was referring to the North Caucasus region of Russia, where two separatist wars took place in the 1990s, or the South Caucasus, including Georgia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also known to have survived several assassination threats before and after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Earlier, the British daily The Times reported that President Zelensky had survived at least three assassination crises at the end of February.

The Russian-backed Wagner group and Chechen special forces attempted to assassinate President Zelensky, but the operation failed as insider information leaked, The Times said.
