Rwandan army accuses DRC of firing rockets at its territory

The Rwandan army accuses the Congolese army of being behind rocket fire which landed in Rwanda on Monday.

According to the Rwandan Defense Forces (RDF), two sectors in the north-west of the country were affected and there were several injuries and no further details for the moment.

Kigali asks that light be shed on the events.

According to the Rwandan army, the shots took place between 10 and 10:20 a.m. Monday morning, hitting the sectors of Kinigi and Nyange, near the town of Musanze, the Volcanoes National Park and the border with the DRC.

The situation would quickly return to normal.

Sources on site still mention several damaged homes and at least one injured.

In a press release, the Rwanda Defense Forces announce in any case that they have already asked the Extended Joint Verification Mechanism (MCVE), a regional body, to open an investigation immediately and also mention direct exchanges with Kinshasa. 

The incident comes amid a resurgence of M23 in eastern DRC.

After several weeks of calm, and while Kinshasa is trying to relaunch exchanges with armed groups within the framework of the so-called Nairobi process, fighting has taken place in recent days between this rebel group and the FARDC in the territory of Ruthshuru, not far from Rwanda.

Rwanda, which Kinshasa recently accused of supporting the M23, which Kigali denied outright.
