Today's tribe of about 480 in Scandinavia, of which about 400 in Sweden, is too large according to the Minister of Rural Affairs, who believes that the population should be below today's mini-level.

The government is now deciding to give the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency the task of once again investigating how many wolves there should be in Sweden.

When the wolf inventory in Östergötland ended last March, this year, there were at least 7 wolves in the county, ie the wolf pair in the county's only territory, the so-called Långbogen district, together with their five last year's puppies.

If that figure is too high for the county, wildlife manager Fredrik Näsman does not want to comment.

- I will probably have to leave that question to the researchers and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, who decide on those levels.

As recently as 2019, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency determined, based on the latest available research, that the Swedish tribe needs to consist of at least 300 wolves in order not to be inbred and able to remain long-term.

Hear game manager Fredrik Näsman tell in the clip above about the wolf situation in the county and the latest sheep grazing.
