An impressive fire broke out this Tuesday shortly after 4:30 p.m. in a campsite in Grimaud, a small town in the Var located by the sea. The fire quickly spread to the surrounding vegetation thanks to explosions of gas bottles equipping mobile homes damaged by the flames.

Twenty of them were destroyed or heavily damaged, said the firefighters, 55 of whom are on site to fight the flames.

Twenty gendarmes were dispatched to the scene to ensure the safety of some 2,500 evacuated campers.

Around 6:30 p.m., the fire was being brought under control, authorities said.

From Toulon to Marseille, the chase ends at the police station
