This tragedy occurred during a police operation in the Vila Cruzeiro favela, in the northern zone of Rio de Janeiro, announced the military police, citing 10 "suspected criminals" and a resident of the neighborhood. 

Military police, who frequently carry out such morning operations in Rio's favelas, said they were greeted by gunfire in the upper part of the favela as they began an operation to "locate and capture criminals". .

Among the suspects sought are "leaders of gangs hidden in the favela", some of them "from other regions of Brazil", in particular from the northeast.

Deadliest raid of the year

This is the deadliest raid for a year in Rio.

In May 2021, a police operation in the Jacarezinho favela killed 28 people, including a policeman, the heaviest toll in the city's history.

According to the G1 news site, the operation on Tuesday particularly targeted the "Comando Vermelho" (red commando), one of the main criminal factions in the country.

Police reported shootings in the upper part of Vila Cruzeiro, "including in the forest" which covers part of the hill.

Seven assault rifles, five pistols, ten motorcycles and six cars were seized during the operation.
