With the arrival of summer and the lack of staff, concern is mounting in hospitals, particularly at the Bordeaux University Hospital where, since last week, a new organization of nights has forced patients to go through the Samu to hope to be admitted.

This Tuesday, the unions of the establishment called for a demonstration to denounce this situation.

The more summer approaches, the more concern rises among caregivers.

If the lack of personnel has been a reality for a few years in hospitals, the summer vacation period risks bringing certain emergency services to the brink of rupture.

At the Bordeaux University Hospital since last week, for lack of staff at night, patients are forced to go through the Samu to hope to be admitted.

The establishment's unions denounce a situation which forces them to sort out the sick and called for demonstrations on Tuesday.

“A problem of interest for the profession”

"Emergencies in danger", can we read on a large banner installed at the entrance to the adult emergency room of the Pellegrin hospital.

The unions denounce this new organization of the nights, decided by the management of the Bordeaux University Hospital.

The regulation of the patients is done at the entrance of the service, if one presents himself there in this time slot.

“We recently managed to get Civil Security to no longer deal with regulation. Now it will be a paramedic with a doctor. But the problem is that from 10 p.m., you have a intercom and we do not know where patients who are not admitted to the emergency room will be directed", regrets a Force Ouvrière delegate.

“It is true that there is a problem of recruitment and above all of attractiveness and interest in the profession. We are certainly emerging from the pandemic, but we have been describing working conditions for years.

Understaffed when summer arrives

Another difficulty is the lack of staff.

"There are more than 40 medical students who respond to center 15 to reinforce the teams because they are understaffed. There are between 1,000 and 1,400 calls a day. We are transferring the problem to another system. We knows that there are people who will also postpone their visit to the emergency room. There are cases where patients risk falling through the cracks", warns the representative of the South union.

The arrival of the tourist season also worries the unions.

"We are going to have busy weekends in terms of attendance and we are in a very touristic region, so it could be complicated. How are we going to do this summer, with the tourists? We need people", adds a member of the CGT.

The unions are therefore demanding job creation and the end of this new organization for a return to normal 24-hour operation.
