Ten people are suspected "of having actively participated in the looting of six jewelry stores" in November 2021 in Guadeloupe, the Pointe-à-Pitre prosecutor's office said on Saturday.

They were indicted for "aggravated theft in meetings by breaking and entering, with damage by fire".

Four were remanded in custody and six under judicial control.

The facts had taken place in the context of urban violence which had broken out in Guadeloupe against a backdrop of social crisis and contestation of the health pass.

An “urban guerrilla context”

From November 18 to 20, “six jewelry stores were looted.

One had been set on fire” and the fire had spread to other buildings, causing a major fire in the center of Pointe-à-Pitre, a judicial source had indicated.

The firefighters then spoke of a "context of urban guerrilla warfare that had greatly hampered the delivery of relief on site".

Among the ten implicated are a minor at the time of the facts and two repeat offenders, said Patrick Desjardins, public prosecutor of Pointe-à-Pitre.

A first alleged looter had already been indicted at the end of 2021.
