At Gåvsta school outside Uppsala, several elderly people usually meet and have lunch together after walking.

- These lunches are something to look forward to, it is not always that the hikes are so fun and then you need a carrot.

It's nice to meet and get this social part we need, says Birgitta Olsson.

On Monday, she ate together with, among others, Ann-Christin Eriksson, Berit Westerlund and Rolf Engström.

- I was here at half past ten and then the volume was much higher than it is now.

That's how it should be, that was the case in my time as well, says Rolf Engström.

Starts up again

Uppsala municipality started the project with senior lunches at the beginning of 2020, but it was stopped by the corona pandemic.

The initiative is now being expanded to include 19 school restaurants around Uppsala.

- We want to get seniors into the school restaurants, this is a collaboration with schools and principals and we would like to see more schools participate in this.

Preferably around the municipality and it is a dialogue we lead forward, says Anders Sundin, department manager at Måltidsservice in Uppsala municipality.

Senior lunches should reduce the loneliness of the elderly, do they really do that?

- What we have seen from the pilot project in 2020 and during this start-up, there has been a good interaction between seniors and children.

We at Måltidsservice try to make as good food as possible to attract the elderly, says Anders Sundin.
