Tomer-Yerushalmi is the one who will be ultimately responsible for determining whether an individual soldier should be punished for the fatal shooting of Abu Akleh, which occurred in connection with clashes with Palestinians on the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The lawyer states that it is not possible to determine whether the journalist was killed by an Israeli soldier who aimed at her, or whether she was killed by a bullet fired from an armed Palestinian.

Shireen Abu Akleh's employer, Qatar-based television channel Al Jaazera, has accused Israel of deliberately killing the journalist.

Does not share evidence

The Israeli military says it has focused on an incident in which an Israeli soldier fired at an armed Palestinian near Abu Akleh.

Israel has offered to conduct a ballistic investigation into the deadly bullet in the presence of US and Palestinian experts, but the Palestinian Authority has refused, saying the Israeli military is "fully responsible" for the journalist's death.
