According to statistics produced by SVT from the Swedish Public Employment Service, the proportion of domestic-born openly unemployed at the end of 2021 was 3-4% in ages 16-64.

For foreign-born people of the same age, on the other hand, unemployment was 12-14%.

Large reduction in Hultsfred and Högsby

There are municipalities in the country that have succeeded in reducing the proportion of unemployed among foreign-born.

In Högsby municipality, for example, unemployment in that group decreased by 18.3% during the period 2016-2020.

In Kalmar and Kronoberg counties, Högsby and Hultsfred stand out when it comes to reducing foreign-born unemployed men.

Högsby municipality decreased by as much as 33% during the years 2016-2020 and Hultsfred decreased by 33.3%.

Even after the reduction, however, unemployment among foreign-born is still among the highest in these two municipalities.

The Swedish Public Employment Service sees that more people are starting their own company and that it has been a way into the labor market for foreign-born people.

Small change in Norrliden and Araby

Two areas with a large proportion of foreign-born are Norrliden in Kalmar and Araby / Dalbo / Nydala in Växjö.

In Norrliden, 61 percent are foreign-born (in 2020) while 79 percent are foreign-born in Araby / Dalbo / Nydala.

Unemployment in these areas was almost unchanged during the period 2016-2020.

It decreased by 0.2% in Norrliden and by 1.5% in Araby / Dalbo / Nydala.
