Two decrees for the establishment of the "Sharjah Media Council" and the reorganization of the "Sharjah Media City"

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, issued Emiri Decree No. (6) of 2017 regarding the establishment and organization of the Sharjah Media Council.

The decree stipulates that a government council called the "Sharjah Media Council" will be established in the emirate and enjoy legal personality, and have financial, administrative and technical independence, and the necessary capacity to carry out legal actions that ensure the achievement of the goals for which it was established.

Decree transferring the Director General of Sharjah Media Corporation, Dr. Khaled Al Midfa, to Sharjah Media City and appointing him as its president.

According to the articles of the decree, the council aims to formulate the emirate’s media policy, enhance its position in the media at the local, regional and international levels, coordinate between media institutions in accordance with the emirate’s policy, and supervise its free zones.

The decree defined a set of competencies and powers for the council, taking into account the federal legislation, including drawing the general policy for the media sector in the emirate, proposing strategies and plans for developing media in the emirate, drawing up the media plan for the emirate, and other specializations.

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi also issued an Emiri decree reorganizing Sharjah Media City, a "free zone authority".

Decree No. (11) of 2017 stipulates that a free zone for media will be established in the emirate by virtue of the name “Sharjah Media City,” a free zone authority, affiliated with the Sharjah Media Council.

The decree stated that the city aims to develop and embrace talents and manpower working in the media and creative field, and regional leadership in the field of media and creative education and training, and to support and develop high-quality media and creative content, in addition to providing a suitable environment for media and creativity.

The decree also stipulates that companies, institutions, individuals and employees in the city shall be exempted from taxes imposed in the emirate, for a period of 50 years, subject to renewal.

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi also issued an Emiri Decree regarding the transfer of the Director General of Sharjah Media Corporation, Dr. Khaled Omar Al Midfa, to Sharjah Media City “Free Zone Authority” and appointing him as its head.
