It was after the Taliban took power in August 2021 that spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid made the promise:

- Women are an important part of our society.

They must be able to work in education and other things.

There must be no discrimination against women within what Islamic Sharia law says.

Now, women's rights have instead been severely restricted.

Among other things, there is a requirement for a comprehensive veil in public environments.

"They should wear chador because it is a tradition and a sign of respect," Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada told AFP earlier in May.

Chador is a full-coverage veil that goes from the head down to the feet.

It covers the hair while parts of the face are visible.

"Women who are not too old or too young must cover their faces, apart from their eyes, as prescribed by Sharia law.

This is so as not to provoke men who are not mahram (close relatives) ", reads the decree.
