Russia announces the establishment of new military bases in response to the expansion of NATO

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced Friday that his country will establish 12 new military bases in the west of the country in response to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) reinforcement of its forces and its expected expansion in Finland and Sweden.

"By the end of the year, 12 military bases (will be established) and units will be deployed in the military district in the west," Shoigu told officials of his ministry and the army, noting "the increasing military threats on the Russian border."
