In connection with a performance in Dallas, George W Bush commented on the current world situation and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

"... the result is a lack of accountability in Russia, and a single man's decision to order a completely unjust and brutal invasion of Iraq," Bush said, quickly realizing what he had said.

- I mean Ukraine.

Iraq.

.. Anyway, he said, shook his head a little and laughed.

The audience laughed too.

- I'm 75, the ex-president added softly and then continued with his speech about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Criticized for the mistake

But the playful tone did not go down well with everyone.

The mistake became a talking point on Twitter, and many highlighted the fact that Bush ordered the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, and wondered if he would not have been prosecuted for war crimes.

The invasion of Iraq was described as part of the US "war on terror" and was motivated by a claim that the country had weapons of mass destruction.

Dictator Saddam Hussein was ousted, but no weapons of mass destruction were ever found.
