- In this project we use modern technology.

This digitized technology is already on the market and it is widely used on the road side.

We want to use the corresponding technology to be able to warn of incoming trains at unprotected level crossings, says Torbjörn Biding, investigator at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Fatal accidents

SVT Nyheter Öst and Uppdrag granskning have previously reported on the dangers of unattended level crossings.

According to the Swedish Transport Administration, there are 6,500 level crossings around the country that need to be reviewed.

The majority of them are unattended and lack warning and safety systems such as barriers and warning signals.

The work of securing these intersections will continue for a long time and the newly developed app will serve as an extra security measure.

Will be used soon

- We are working to remove these level crossings, but we are also taking down trees and clearings to increase the visibility at these level crossings.

But this work takes time, so through available digitized technology we can use it as a complement in this context, says Torbjörn Biding.

VFT, Warning for trains as the app will be called, shall warn the user when trains are within 300 meters of the level crossing.

Work on the new app has been ongoing since 2021 and the Swedish Transport Administration hopes that the system will be put into use soon.
