Iran: 73-year-old journalist returns to prison for "anti-security activities"

Keyvan Samimi, an Iranian journalist and activist, was returned to prison for resuming "activities against national security" while on bail on health grounds, local media reported on Thursday.

Samimi, 73, was imprisoned several times before and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Mr. Samimi's last arrest dates back to December 2020. He was sentenced to three years in prison for "conspiracy against national security".

He was imprisoned in Semnan prison, more than 200 km east of Tehran.

Following health problems, the journalist was nevertheless authorized to return home in February for treatment, according to local media.

A doctor, having examined him, considered that his state of health allowed him to return to prison, according to the Mehr agency.

Earlier this week, the same agency announced the arrest of Said Madani Ghahfarokhi, professor of sociology at Allameh Tabatabai University in Tehran.

The latter is “ 

suspected of maintaining links with foreign countries and of having carried out activities threatening the security of the country

 ”, according to the same source.
