• The authorities advise against swimming outside the supervised areas, which are still restricted in this pre-season.

  • The conditions are improving this weekend after big coefficients favorable to the baïnes.

  • On three beaches on the coast, surveillance will take place continuously until Pentecost.

Tuesday and Wednesday, a series of drownings took place on the Gironde coast.

On Tuesday, two deaths and the disappearance of a person at sea due to baïne currents took place.

And on Wednesday, “three new operations were carried out in the Lacanau/Lège-Cap-Ferret sector bringing relief to four people in great danger of death, reports the maritime prefect of the Atlantic Olivier Lebas, this Thursday.

Two of them were in "stage 3" of drowning, that is to say almost unconscious, in acute respiratory distress and required hospitalization.

Progressive surveillance on the beaches

A dozen rescues took place, just in the area of Lacanau, stormed by swimmers.

The Dragon33 civil security helicopter had been detached there in an emergency, in conjunction with the prefecture.

“The decision was made to reopen the supervised area until the end of the Pentecost weekend”, explains Surveplage 33, a single-purpose union for the surveillance of Gironde beaches and lakes.

Currently the beaches of Lacanau, Carcans and Vendays-Montalivet are supervised on weekends and public holidays.

Faced with this early season and the risks involved, they will be continuous.

Each year, the cost of surveillance for these three coastal towns grouped together in the SIVU amounts to 1.2 million, including 600,000 euros for Lacanau.

As every season, the union should ask for help from the Department and the Metropolis to bear this burden.

While summer temperatures are announced for the weekend, the authorities invite the greatest caution, even if the swell phenomena are announced as less important.

They advise against swimming outside the supervised beaches, referenced by the GIP Littoral.

The Maritime Prefecture of the Atlantic recalls that every summer, baïnes are the leading cause of death at sea for water sports enthusiasts.
