Because of the continued activities of former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) for Russian energy companies, the European Parliament wants to call for possible sanctions against him.

This emerges from the draft of a cross-party resolution.

According to the EU sanctions list, “European members of the boards of large Russian companies and politicians who continue to receive Russian funds”.

Schröder is named in the text and is "urgently urged" to give up his posts in Russian state-owned companies - following the example of former French Prime Minister François Fillon and other politicians who had given up their posts because of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

The chairman of the CDU/CSU group in the European Parliament, Daniel Caspary, said: "Gerhard Schröder must finally give up his Russian posts." It was "simply depressing that a former Chancellor has completely lost his moral compass".

The SPD must also "show its colors as to whether it can continue to tolerate Putin's friend Schröder in its own ranks".

According to the draft, the demand is supported by a broad alliance of conservatives, social democrats, liberals and greens in the EU Parliament.

The resolution is not binding on EU countries.

However, the member countries have the say in the sanctions.
